A mum’s mission

29 Jun, 2010 10:00 AM
MAURA Luxford is a woman on a mission.

Last year, she rode a bike 1500 kilometres to Melbourne in memory of her daughter, Hannah, who died the previous December from melanoma at the age of 20.

The grieving mum doesn't claim to be a cyclist, but she was determined to honour her daughter.

Ms Luxford is now on another mission to highlight the dangers of melanoma.

This time she is in familiar territory, on the back of a horse.

"I am not an athlete, nor the Woman from Snowy River. I am a mum with fire in my belly", the accomplished horsewoman said.

"I have lost a child ".

Melanoma is the leading cancer in young people and cancer is the second biggest cause of death in Australia after car accidents.

Ms Luxford rode through Cohuna early last week, then to Kerang and Murrabit before back-tracking to Kerang and on to Dingwall.

She set out from Willawarrin near the mid-north coast of New South Wales on April 18 on the Ride 4 A Cure to raise awareness and funds for the Hannah Rose Melanoma Fund.

The 1600-kilometre trek will end at 11am on Sunday, July 4 when she is greeted at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne by family, friends, well-wishers and Associate Professor Grant McArthur, the oncologist who cared for Hannah.
