A KERANG man has been jailed for three months for possession of cannabis.
Kerang Magistrate's Court was told that Steve Ellis, 26, ran from police in possession of an egg-carton containing six cannabis seedlings after being observed at Kerang railway station on October 23 last year.
He was alighting from a train when detected by police.
His defence lawyer said that Mr Ellis was no longer using cannabis, but Magistrate William Gibb said no-one in the court "would believe that for a second."
In his defence, his lawyer said the man was a carer for his paraplegic father and was paid by Centrelink for playing an important role in the community.
Mr Ellis admitted that the offence was an act of foolishness.
His counsel asked the magistrate to consider a community corrections order or a financial penalty bearing in mind the amount of cannabis Mr Ellis possessed at the time.
However, Magistrate Gibb said the court was not talking about a small amount of cannabis.
Magistrate Gibb said it was only last July that Mr Ellis failed to comply with a community corrections order regarding the possession and use of cannabis.
"It demonstrates that he is still engaged in the drug culture," the magistrate said.
Magistrate Gibb said Mr Ellis has been engaged in the drug scene for eight years and that he's been "afforded every opportunity to do something about it."
