Police dismayed by motorists

09 Dec, 2011 03:00 AM
POLICE are dismayed over the failure of some motorists to heed the drink-driving message.

Two local drivers have been charged with driving whilst exceeding the prescribed blood-alcohol concentration in recent days.

Acting Senior Sergeant Brian Gibson said that each driver will face Kerang Magistrates' Court.

Both were stopped during routine late-night patrols.

Random preliminary breath testing is also being conducted on district roads on every shift as part of Operation RAID - which refers to "remove all impaired drivers."

Acting Senior Sergeant Gibson said that some drivers believe that they can avoid detection late at night, but variable shifts and two local police crews on the road each day mean that motorists do not know when they will confront police on duty.

"The simple message is, don't take the risk; if you drink, just don't drive," he said.

Acting Senior Sergeant Gibson said that almost every driver detected breaching drink-driving laws has the excuse, "I thought I was alright" or "I only had a couple."

Police are also detecting multiple speeding offences on district roads.

Across the State, police have breath-tested almost 400,000 motorists during the first 18 days of Operation RAID and caught more than 1000 drink drivers.

As part of the operation police have:

* Breath tested 396,198 motorists;

* Detected 1064 drink drivers;

* Detected 147 drug drivers;

* Detected 1703 disqualified and unlicensed drivers;

* Detected 1040 seatbelt offences;

* Detected 7361 speeding offences;

* Detected 2179 mobile phone offences; and

* Impounded 163 vehicle impoundments.

"With Christmas parties and end of year celebrations, this is absolutely one of the most high risk periods on our roads,” road policing chief, Superintendent Neville Taylor said.

"We have already caught more than 1000 drink drivers as part of our Summer Stay Christmas enforcement campaign.

"Really, these drivers are lucky that we caught them before someone got hurt.

"My message is this, if you are going out and plan to drive - don't drink. If you are planning to drink - then don't drive.”
