TWO fine citizens from two district communities have shared the title of the Gannawarra Shire Council 2012 Australia Day Citizen of the Year.
Community leadership is the hallmark of both dynamic women.
Quambatook retailer, Sue Dunne and Cohuna Neighbourhood House co-ordinator, Lorraine Learmonth formally received their awards at a civic reception hosted by Gannawarra Mayor, Cr Max Fehring.
Both were then further acknowledged at Australia Day celebrations in their respective towns yesterday.
Shannon Knight, of Kerang, is the Gannawarra Young Citizen of the Year and the Lakes Arts and Cultural Association has been awarded Community Group/Event of the Year.
Susan Dunne is the store owner in Quambatook and amongst other commendations was nominated for her organisational skills, voluntary work and her communication skills, that enable her to assist many people in the community.
Ms Dunne is involved in the Quambatook Development Association and has supported the Golden Rivers Netball League and Football Club, Quambatook Tennis Club and Amity Club as an office-bearer.
Her great concern and kindness for members of the community, particularly the senior citizens and members living on their own, and her community leadership in the 2011 flood event was also noted.
Ms Dunne said that when she saw the people at the presentation she was in disbelief of her own win.
"(I'm) overwhelmed, that's all I can say," Ms Dunne said.
Mrs Learmonth said that she was surprised to be acknowledged.
Apart from being Cohuna Neighbourhood House co-ordinator, she was nominated for her dedication to the physical and mental welfare of her community, her vision, leadership skills and voluntary work.
Ms Learmonth is a mentor in the Leadability program for women with disabilities and is involved in Red Cross, the University of the Third Age and Guides Victoria.
She was also a prime mover in establishment of a Men's Shed at Cohuna.
Mrs Learmonth said she was very surprised about her win because a lot of people nominated in the shire have done amazing things - especially during the floods.
"I've had a lot of support from the community and volunteers," she said.
"The Lions Club nominated me and I'm grateful for that."
Cr Fehring said that all the Australia Day 2012 Award recipients have made significant and lasting contributions to our community and all are inspiring role models for the Gannawarra community and beyond.
He said without such selfless endeavour and support our society would not operate with the level of harmony and care for the well-being of each other.
"Australia has a lot to be proud of," Cr Fehring said.
