District youth cricketers claim division title

03 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
A VERY successful Bendigo Country Week cricket tournament for the Northern District association was capped off by the Colts youth development team winning the final in division four and going undefeated all week.

The side, made up of under-20 players with a few over-age imports to add experience, beat the Campaspe team in the final.

The senior team was a tad unlucky not to make the final in division two, losing only one game for the week.

Highlights of the week included the great start the opening batsmen gave the team on most days. Boddie Arthur had a pair of sixties and also got wickets as a spinner and Joel Perry top-scored on day one with 73 and with 35 on day three.

Joel chipped in with seven wickets as well. Joel Woolhouse, batting at number three, had a couple of good knocks with a 51 not out and 41 and shared the wicket-keeping duties.

The captain for three of the days, Russell Bott, was the top run-maker with 188 for the week, which included 134 on the Thursday.

Brodey Farley took a five-wicket haul on day three and top-scored with 53 in the final to win the player of the match award.

Nick Farley took four wickets on the Thursday and broke the back of the opposition’s top order in the final with three wickets.

Logan Spittal picked up four wickets in the final and three on the Monday. Michael Runciman had a top score of 25 on the Wednesday and shared the wicket-keeping duties.

Tom Dehne opened the bowling and took two wickets in last Friday's final.

Paul Robinson captained the team on the Tuesday and Wednesday, made 31 on the Wednesday and picked up two wickets on the Tuesday. Mick Young made 21 on the Wednesday and 14 in the final.

This was the Northern District Cricket Association’s first venture into tournament play with a Colts team and it came away with a bigger result than everyone thought possible - the mixture of younger and senior players led to a successful and enjoyable week.
