No license to thrill: tournament cancelled

20 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
THE third Wandella Sixes cricket series, planned for Australia Day, has been cancelled and will be replaced by a simpler family fun day at Kerang's Riverside Park.

Scheduled to return after being washed out due to the 2011 floods, tournament director Greg Dickson said on Wednesday that the 2012 edition "is not going to go ahead".

"We don't have a license...we can't serve alcohol."

As a result of this decision, there will be no Northern District sides taking part in any six-a-side games on the day.

"It'll just be Wandella Cricket Club and the juniors," said Dickson.

"We'll just have a family day."

It is anticipated that the informal, social cricket encounter will begin at around 9.30am, although Dickson added that all hope was not lost for the return of the full tournament format in the future.

"We will try and get it back at some stage," he said.

Previous Sixes winners have been Wandella (2009) and Cohuna United (2010).

Organised Australia Day sporting competition will go ahead, however, as a double-bill at Kerang's Golf Club. From 9.30am there will be an Ambrose golf event, while at 12.30pm the lawn bowlers commence a triples tournament.
